At the very young age of 14 I became pregnant. Out of all my friends I was the only one who had been with just one person and ironically ended up the only one pregnant. I had to leave my high school and attend a special school for pregnant teens. I lost most of my friends.
My son's father was on drugs and ended up getting in trouble for getting a minor pregnant. We were only four years apart. Now some may think the only way to get in trouble is if an adult/ parent press charges however, one night while my son's father was arguing with his father, the cops came because of all the noise. They asked me if the baby was his and then asked our ages. Instead of going to court for the argument he had with his father, he was there for charges of statutory rape. On top of his life being forever changed and always being a part of the system, my life was drastically changed too. During my time at the special school, I was struggling to get things done due to all the stress from my son's father’s situation. I was then offered to take an exam called the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE). I passed it and was granted permission to graduate at the early age of 16.
I had numerous jobs and had to put my son in child care with strangers. I was unable to give my son all the attention he very so needed because I had to make money to support him. If it were not for the help of my mother, I would not have been able to do it all. Today, my son is 9 years old and is living a wonderful life. By the time I was 20, I met a wonderful man who not only took care of my son and I, but showed me a better life, a life with God. We have been married for three years and have a daughter who is now 1. As for my son's father, he is finally off probation and has a family of his own with two kids. There are so many things I could say I would do different but then I wouldn't be able to help teen moms out there today who are struggling and I wouldn't be able to share my experience with young girls who are thinking about sex. Because of my hardships, I might be able to help someone make their life better or help them to stay on the right path.
The one thing I regret when I was 16 was, not signing up for college right away. I could have been graduated or going through med school by now. But, recently I told myself, "It's never too late." I signed up for school and will be attending this fall.
Although my teen years were very difficult and I missed out on things like prom, school activities, friends, and even experiencing the true college life, I have become a better person, a person with knowledge and life experience. I will try everything I can to help the youth in staying on the right path so they do not have to suffer the hardships that I went through. I will help teen moms who have no direction and need help finding support. I will always be there to support those who need advice or just someone to vent too about whatever teen trials they might be facing. If you are reading this and need someone to talk to or just need direction on finding help in your area, please feel free to contact me.
