  • Single mom's time management

I am a single mother of two boys. The hardest part of having a job with two sons is managing time. Between getting them to school, me to work, twenty thousand doctor’s office visits and a slew of various after school sports, if I didn’t have a plan I would go insane. I’ll try to give you some tips on how I survive my heavy days.

Every morning, I wake up at roughly six am. I splash water on my face and then go wake up the boys. About halfway through getting dressed, I go and wake up the boys again and then stand there to make sure they actually roll out of bed. Tip number one is not to trust young boys to wake themselves. After a quick breakfast, teeth brushing and hair combing, we’re able to leave the house at roughly 7:30. Tip number two is to always make sure your kids get everything ready the night before, not the day of.

Since I can’t afford parking at work, I drive back home and catch a bus to work after dropping the boys off at school. At around lunch time, I get up and decide to make a quick run to the store to pick up whatever I can from there. Tip number three is to use every minute of your time. Every minute you use during the week is a minute that you have on the weekend. The boys have a checkup at 4:45, so I’m leaving work at 4. With bags in hand I leap for the bus and get home with just enough time to get the boys from school to the doctor’s office on time.

Just to shave a few minutes off the night, I had the boys bring their homework with them. Tip number four is to combine as many tasks as possible. On the way home, I might pick something up to eat. Otherwise, I throw something together. After that, it’s bedtime. Tomorrow morning, the madness will start all over again. The best advice I can give for managing time is Tip number five, which is be flexible. Sometimes I offer to work an occasional weekend day, so I can get a day off during the week, when I can get some official things done.
