Basketball is my life. I have been playing it ever since I can remember. If anybody says that basketball is a sport and not a way of life, they don’t understand what they’re talking about. I’ve been told I’m pretty good at it and people have asked me how I got there.
It’s not really a secret. I got good at the game the same way everybody else did. I worked at it. I work at it every day. I practice until I feel like I’m at my peak, then I go further. On school days, I wake up an hour before I have to and for the next half hour, I sprint from one end of the driveway to the other, practicing my dribbling and quick direction changes. After that, I take a shower and get ready for the day. All during my shower, I’m thinking up new stuff. I’m thinking of old games that I’ve played. I’m thinking of new moves to use. I’m thinking of the game I watched the other night. The bottom line is that basketball is always at the forefront of my mind. If I’m not eating, sleeping or working, I’m doing something involving basketball.
During my free period, I’m in the gym just shooting away, seeing how far I can go before I miss. After class is over for the day, I’m right back to practicing. When I go to basketball practice, I give it everything I have. I’m crazy about basketball. I’m the kind of guy who will practice even after coming home from practice. I come home, I do my homework, eat dinner with my family, and then I’m right back to practicing before it gets too dark to see. On the weekends, I spend at least two hours practicing drills and, if I can, I get somebody from the team to practice with me.
People say I am obsessed with basketball. So was Lebron. There is no doubt that you need talent. But just talent will not get you anywhere without lots and lots of effort. If you have a little talent, consider yourself to have been given the opportunity to work hard!
The thing people need to understand is that if you want to be good at something, then you have to devote yourself to it. You can’t half ass it and expect to be a pro. You don’t have to follow the same schedule that I do, but you do need to make sure that you are putting in enough effort to actually get something out of it. That’s the only way I can think of anybody getting better.
