  • I got laid off and found another career.

A couple of years ago, in 2008, I got laid off from a decent job at a car dealer. Bad economy, slowing sales, they said. I worked there for more than 5 years, was a great employee, and never complained about anything.

There I was, with two children and a mortgage, and no job. I had some savings, I withdrew some money from my retirement account, and started clipping coupons. It was like going back to my early days, when money was tight, and I clipped coupons to save money. Only now, again, I was doing all the little things I did to save money, but I had two kids with me. Being a single mom is very difficult, especially, with little or uncertain child support.

I had enough money to get us through for a few months. I took a long, deep breath. I wanted to do something where I would always have a job regardless of the economy. I have heard from many people that women’s beauty salons are almost recession resistant, where women would continue to spend money to look and feel better. So I decided to give that a try and went to a beauty school for a few months.

Luckily, I like that kind of work. Being a woman myself, I get regular manicures and pedicures, even though I may cut down on eating out at restaurants. Getting into this work actually enabled me to see the other side of things, and I learned to give great customer service. Whatever things I complained about when I was a customer, I was able to look at those problems, and made sure they did not happen, or improvised upon them. I graduated school at the top pf my class, and was promptly hired at a local beauty place.

I am doing well, and making good money. The economy did cause our store’s income to drop a little, but we didn’t have to shut down or anything. All of our coworkers agreed to take a small paycut so we could stay in business. When the economy improves and people start spending again, I am sure our business will do even better which means more income for us.

My message is- don’t get disheartened if you get laid off. Look around for other opportunities, and if you like women’s beauty things, you should consider this as a career, as we know we women always want to look our best and are willing to spend money to do so.
