Getting out of drugs was a lot harder than getting into them. I started in high school. It wasn’t anything major at first. I was just into a little weed with some friends on some weekends. I was a social drug user. Then I was doing it all by myself. It was slow at first. One here, one there. Then, it just started getting worse. My grades went down. I skipped school quite a bit, and then got suspended. I was getting into other stronger drugs. When my dad noticed, that’s when I started to panic a little bit. I actually broke down and went to rehab for a while.
The problem with rehab is that it only works if you actually try, which is something I didn’t have much experience doing. I dropped out. I still wasn’t getting out of drugs though. That just made it worse. I was starting to get desperate. Then Ricky, my supplier, went to jail. That did it for me. Winding up in a cell with some guy twice my size was enough to spook me. I went back to rehab, with a lot more motivation this time. It wasn’t easy, but I tried.
Then came the shakes, and the sweating. I kept seeing things, hearing things that weren’t there. It took me a little bit more than the 30 days to get clean, but I got through it. I prayed a lot. I also called home a lot. I think that if I hadn’t done those two things, I wouldn’t have made it. The bottom line is, I needed their support. I needed them to back me up while I was getting out of drugs and I’m really happy that they had my back.
If I had to give some advice to people, it would be to not get started in the first place. I’m not gonna go crazy and say that you are guaranteed to hit rock bottom from taking a hit. But, if you aren’t on it in the first place, it can’t get worse. If you are on them and want to get off, now is not the time to be a hero. Ask for help. Ask mom, ask dad, ask the creepy neighbor with the cats. Ask whoever you have that can help you get better. No matter how bad you think they’d feel if you asked for help getting out of drugs, they’d feel a lot worse if you destroyed yourself.
